Stone, Paver & Concrete Experts

Hardscaping That Transforms Your Outdoor Space

Hardscaping is the backbone of any great outdoor living space. Patios, walkways, retaining walls, and fire features create the structure and flow that turn a bare backyard into a functional, inviting extension of your home. Done right, hardscaping adds lasting value to your property, solves grading and drainage problems, and gives you usable outdoor space you can enjoy year-round.

At Verdant Hills Landscape & Fence, hardscaping is one of our core specialties. As a father-and-son team with nearly a decade of experience, we've built hundreds of patios, walls, walkways, and outdoor features across the Greater St. Louis area. We understand the unique challenges of building hardscapes in Missouri — from our heavy clay soils and aggressive freeze-thaw cycles to the drainage demands of our spring and summer storms.

Every hardscape project we take on starts with proper planning, accurate grading, and meticulous base preparation. These are the steps that many contractors cut corners on, and they're the exact reasons patios sink, walls lean, and walkways buckle after a few years. We don't take shortcuts. We excavate to the right depth, compact in lifts, install drainage where it's needed, and build every project to last.

From a simple front-entry walkway to a full backyard transformation with a patio, fire pit, retaining walls, and an outdoor kitchen, you work directly with the owners from start to finish — never a subcontractor, never a salesperson. We take pride in our craftsmanship and treat every project as if we were building it in our own backyard.

What We Build

Hardscaping Services

We design and install a full range of hardscape features using premium materials and proven construction techniques built specifically for St. Louis conditions.

Paver Patios

A well-built paver patio is the foundation of any great outdoor living space. We design and install custom patios using interlocking concrete pavers, natural stone, and brick in a wide range of patterns, colors, and textures. Whether you want an intimate dining area off your back door or a sprawling entertainment space with built-in seating walls, we build every patio on a properly excavated and compacted aggregate base with geotextile fabric for long-term stability. Our patios are designed to handle St. Louis freeze-thaw cycles without shifting, settling, or cracking.

Retaining Walls

Retaining walls solve grading problems, prevent erosion, and create usable flat areas on sloped properties. We build structural retaining walls using segmental block, natural stone, and timber systems engineered for St. Louis soil conditions and drainage requirements. Every wall we construct includes proper compacted base material, drainage aggregate behind the wall, perforated drain tile, and filter fabric to prevent hydrostatic pressure buildup. For walls over four feet in height, we work with licensed engineers to ensure structural integrity and code compliance.

Walkways & Paths

A well-designed walkway connects your home to your outdoor spaces and guides visitors through your landscape with purpose and style. We install walkways using pavers, flagstone, natural stone, and brick in both formal geometric layouts and casual, organic curves. Every walkway is built on a compacted base with proper pitch for drainage, and we set borders or soldier courses to keep edges tight and straight for years. Walkways also improve safety by providing stable, level footing to your patio, garden, front entry, or side yard.

Fire Pits & Outdoor Fireplaces

Nothing extends your outdoor season in St. Louis like a fire feature. We build custom fire pits and outdoor fireplaces using natural stone, concrete block, and manufactured stone veneer that become the centerpiece of your backyard. Our fire pits are available in round, square, and rectangular designs with options for wood-burning or gas-fed inserts. Outdoor fireplaces provide a dramatic focal point and can include mantels, hearths, and wood storage. Every fire feature is built to code with proper clearances, ventilation, and non-combustible materials.

Steps & Staircases

Stone and paver steps provide safe, attractive transitions between different levels of your yard, from your patio down to the lawn, from the driveway up to the front door, or between terraced garden areas. We build freestanding steps and integrated staircase systems using natural stone treads, paver block, and limestone slabs. Each step is set on compacted base material with consistent rise and run dimensions for safe, comfortable footing. We also add low-voltage lighting to steps for nighttime visibility and curb appeal.

Outdoor Kitchens

An outdoor kitchen turns your backyard into a complete entertainment destination. We design and build custom outdoor kitchens with concrete block and stone veneer construction, granite or concrete countertops, and space for built-in grills, side burners, refrigerators, sinks, and storage. Our outdoor kitchens are built on reinforced concrete pads with proper drainage, gas line routing, and electrical conduit for a safe, code-compliant installation. From compact grilling stations to full L-shaped kitchens with bar seating, we build to match your cooking style and entertaining needs.

Premium Materials

Materials We Work With

We use only high-quality hardscaping materials from trusted manufacturers and regional quarries. The right material makes the difference between a hardscape that lasts five years and one that lasts a lifetime.

Interlocking Concrete Pavers

The most versatile hardscaping material available. Concrete pavers come in hundreds of shapes, colors, and textures and can mimic the look of natural stone, brick, or slate at a lower cost. They interlock for superior structural integrity and are easy to repair individually if damaged. We use premium pavers from manufacturers like Belgard, Unilock, and Pavestone.

Natural Stone

Flagstone, bluestone, limestone, and fieldstone offer unmatched natural beauty and a timeless, organic aesthetic. Each piece is unique in shape, color, and texture. Natural stone is ideal for patios, walkways, fire pit surrounds, and retaining walls where you want a one-of-a-kind, high-end look. We source stone from regional quarries for the most authentic appearance.

Brick

Classic clay brick brings traditional warmth and charm to walkways, patio borders, edging, and accent features. Brick pairs beautifully with both modern and traditional home styles and develops a rich patina over time. We use full-size clay pavers rated for vehicular and pedestrian traffic with a range of color options from reds and browns to grays and charcoals.

Segmental Retaining Wall Block

Engineered concrete block systems like Versa-Lok, Allan Block, and Belgard are designed specifically for structural retaining wall applications. They feature an interlocking lip-and-pin design, require no mortar, and are available in a variety of face textures from smooth to tumbled to natural stone appearance. These systems are rated for walls up to several feet tall.

Poured & Stamped Concrete

Poured concrete is a cost-effective option for large patios, driveways, and pool decks. Stamped concrete can be textured and colored to replicate the look of natural stone, brick, or slate. We offer exposed aggregate, broom finish, and custom stamp patterns with integral color and release agents for a durable, attractive finished surface.

Manufactured Stone Veneer

Lightweight manufactured stone veneer replicates the appearance of natural stone at a fraction of the weight and cost. It is ideal for facing outdoor fireplaces, kitchen islands, seat walls, and pillars. We install veneer over concrete block or cementitious backer board with proper lath, scratch coat, and mortar application for a long-lasting bond.
